5 myths are standing in your way. It's time to BUST them.
Myth #1: you only need to treat the organ the inflammation is wrecking
What's keeping your care outdated and ineffective? – Medical Specialists. Why is that? You see an ENT doc for sinus issues. An endocrinologist for hormone issues. A hematologist for blood issues. But most of the time, these doctors are functioning without knowing what the other is seeing or doing.
There's nothing wrong with specializing in general. BUT!... at the very least, all your specialists should be talking to each other, regularly. You see... the problem with having your care split-up among different specialists is that autoimmune disease doesn't care about specialties. It crosses body systems. That's why it so tricky to treat.
Like cancer, autoimmune disease can spreading to other body systems. That's why it's fairly common for a person to start out with one autoimmune condition but end up with 3 or 4.
It all springs from one common source – out of control inflammation. That inflammation spreads from different parts of your body and, while trying to address the source of the inflammation, your body body tissues are damaged by the immune response.
When your brain and spinal cord get caught in the crossfire we call it Multiple Sclerosis. When it's the thyroid, we call it Graves or Hashimoto's. When it's the skin and connective tissue, we call it Scleroderma. When it's the glands that make tears and saliva, we call it Sjögren's.
I can tell you from experience: People who only do the conventional thing (the route that most people take) don't get the results I see... 50% reductions in symptoms and almost complete reversal of symptoms over time, but sometimes in as little as a month.
Because...inflammation, doesn't just lock itself up in one part of your body. And that's the stuff causing your tissue damage, swelling, pain, fatigue, tingling, stomach gurgles, skin issues and discomfort.
You have to use an approach that searches for inflammation, no matter where it's hiding in the body and get’s rid of it. That's exactly why effective treatment plans have to tackle all possible sources.

Myth #2: you need to focus on the symptoms to ensure the patient a good life
Some time ago my husband and I bought an old house to renovate (you know... like you see on HGTV ). It was our first time. We were soooo excited! And wanted to make the place beautiful for some family to enjoy while making a nice profit.
When you turned the knob to take a bath or shower, you'd hear rushing water, but no water came out. Where did it go? It all ended up on the basement floor!... the water went down, gushing past the downstairs kitchen like a mini Niagara falls, inside the wall.
The kitchen floor was absolutely ruined, rotted out!
Oh my, oh my, oh my. What to do? We could have decided..."Hey! Let's NOT fix the kitchen floor but instead, tell the new owners they'll need to put a fan in the basement from time to time."
You. Know... to dry up the moisture that would make it, "a little damp" when someone turned on the water upstairs. Did we do that?
NO!
That would be absurd and criminal (which we are not; we fixed EVERYTHING, perfectly).
You were probably horrified by the thought of not taking care of that problem the RIGHT way. Not going to the source of the problem and fixing it for good.
Yet, that's exactly what well-meaning experts are saying when it comes to treating your autoimmune condition. Take these meds to take care of your autoimmune symptoms... And, Oh yeah, don't forget these pills to take care of the side effects from the first medication. Don't worry everything will be fine (in a getting worse and worse and eventually needing other meds to handle the side effects of the pills for your side effects kinda way).
No! No! No!
Myth #3: you have to use lab values based on the average american
The way our traditional medical system uses lab testing is failing you.
A lot of people don't know this but... the way the medical system came up with the "normal range" was by lab testing average Americans. And choosing the number range (4-9, for example) based on the people who seemed healthy.
If your goal is to enjoy the kind of health the average American enjoys... It's fine.
If you don't know... 40% of average American adults have 2 or more chronic conditions, according to the CDC. And even though the goal when they come up with these reference ranges is to pick people who appear to be healthy, in the past, some of these reference ranges have been off because the Americans they thought were healthy weren't so healthy after all.
Is the average American your picture of health?... A major reason why we still can't get a handle on chronic disease is because we use average or "sick numbers" to help people get healthy! INSANE!
It would be far better if doctors would help patients focus on the optimal range or "healthy numbers" for their lab results. Did you know... In the traditional setting, if your TSH (a thyroid test) comes back between 0.45–5.00 you're considered normal and healthy enough. But when I work with clients, I help them get in the range of 0.45–2.0, because...
that's when your thyroid is functioning well!
...When you're not marching towards thyroid disease but, feeling energetic, focused and capable of getting what you want out of your day... healthy enough to take on rewarding challenges, and feeling good while doing it. That's what using "healthy numbers" does. It produces healthy people.
I'll throw this in too. I'm sure this will help someone today.
There are standard, run-of-the-mill tests that can be done for people with autoimmune conditions that – for some reason – aren't always done. Not when you're being treated. Not when doctors are trying to find out what's wrong. All these tests are routine tests you can get through your PCP.
One test is called, Homocysteine. Usually it's done for people with suspected B12 deficiency or cardiovascular disease, but when you understand how to use "healthy numbers," it'll give you insight into your inflammation levels as well. The second one is Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH). It's one test used to diagnose thyroid disorders. Why should you run this thyroid test, even if you don't have a thyroid disorder?
Because NON-thyroid related autoimmune disease usually develops alongside thyroid related autoimmune disease. For example... you could be suffering from intense fatigue, joint pain, and a lot of RA symptoms. Your doctor could be treating the symptoms (thinking they're due to RA) with no improvement because... they're overlooking the hidden thyroid-related autoimmune condition that's actually causing the symptoms.
Besides using these conventional tests in a smarter way... there are functional medicine tests for tough and tricky situations. These kinds of test go beyond what most doctors would use. But before jumping to those, I start with the conventional tests, using "healthy numbers" intelligently.
In autoimmune disease, time is of the essence. The sooner you find the real cause of the symptoms... the quicker you can get better without risk of losing your job, requiring care from family, or having to get on disability. But there's no reason to quit on your life goals is you follow what I'm teaching you today.
Even very smart people sometimes fall for this next myth... But, using the flip side is the single most powerful tool you have in your fight to take back or keep your life, the way you want…with you in control.
Myth #4: diet & lifestyle will not help autoimmune conditions get better in any real way
Maybe this myth was easy to believe years ago, but not today.
50 years ago (it's documented)... the connection between diet and autoimmunity was already being made by researchers. That's according to a study about the risk of developing Rheumatoid Arthritis**. For over 40 years, health professionals who were outside the system or... who were in the system, but trying to find better ways to help patients, have seen this link.
They've been using this link to help patients regain movement and focus, clear up skin, and recover lost energy. How? Using diet changes and lifestyle adjustments.
Almost all conventional doctors who faithfully follow their med school training, don't encourage diet and lifestyle solutions as serious options for autoimmune sufferers.
The reason they usually give is "there's not enough evidence showing they help." Well...then, do more research! People's lives are at stake. But wait...why isn't there more research being done? Because researchers need funding. But the autoimmune research funded most, is the kind that helps big businesses make money. Like my dad always said, There's no such thing as a free lunch. Most research is based on finding new drugs. Because you can't patent diet and lifestyle solutions.
There's sooo much to gain (and practically nothing to lose) by trying the diet & lifestyle approach. It doesn't make sense not to. Anyway... How could diet and lifestyle NOT affect your autoimmune disease? You know what happens when you eat certain foods or don't get sleep or get stressed out. Autoimmune sufferers all over the world know. People with IBD especially know this well because they experience it everyday.
Even doctors trained in the system, who have gone outside of it to find answers (often-times because they developed autoimmunity themselves)... found out, by experience, that their diet and lifestyle has a major effect on how they feel. In my practice I have –"hands down"– seen this as the biggest factor that leads to dramatic progress. Don't underestimate it.
A processed, nutrient-poor diet and stressful lifestyle (like we have here) promotes inflammation. And inflammation, in high amounts, makes your immune system go haywire. Yes, your genes matter too. But even they can be greatly affected by diet & lifestyle.
Because your genes can increase your chances of having out of control inflammation if you also have a poor diet & an unhealthy lifestyle.
And... stressful childhood experiences matter too (They alter how your genes work). But... your diet and lifestyle can greatly enhance your body's ability to do its job – calm excess inflammation.
This last myth affects you, but only through your doctor or healthcare team. And it’s one of the deadliest of all the myths. Because of the way it works.
Myth #5: your medical team will always feel the way they should about your chances
This one's hurting you in ways you may not realize. It's about thoughts and beliefs, negative ones. But not yours... your doctors'. I'm sorry to have to say this but...
Most doctors don't believe you can overcome autoimmune disease.
They believe that...at best... you'll take medication for the rest of your life getting worse and worse until either the medication or the disease has taken it all... All your energy. All your movement. All your self-worth. All your focus. All your joy. All your dreams. All your relationships. All your opportunities to LIVE.
That hurts... because, if the one that's supposed to be working with you...helping you...on your team!...doesn't believe in you... how hard are they going to work to help you find true healing?
How often will they pour over research to give you the best hope and freshest options for healing? How often will they step "outside the box" to find you effective alternatives? How often will they try to improve your treatment in ways that don't aim to "manage" symptoms but promote long-term vibrant health and happiness.
Is this real? I wish it wasn't. It's not a new problem. Here's how it plays out hundreds of times on a daily basis:
In medical training, doctors are taught to follow certain steps when treating diseases like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol. What's the first step?
Step #1 – Have the patient start a diet and exercise program BEFORE considering any medications.
Step #2 – Start medication once patient has demonstrated that they have not been successful at step #1.
How often do you think Step #1 actually happens in most doctor's offices. Not. Very. Often. Why?... because they don't believe you'll follow through. So...to protect you from yourself, most skip Step #1. Wouldn't you appreciate having a choice in the matter?
But most patients don't get one because of what their doctor thinks of their motivation. Living with autoimmune disease is frustrating enough... You shouldn't have to put up with this kind of awful attitude. Especially from those who are supposed to be helping you.
Isn't it time to take back control of your health and find someone who's going to believe in you enough to give you all the options?...to give you the latest approaches and methods you'll need to have the best chance of recovering?

At 27, Samantha, a mother of two young girls under 3 was suffering from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Crohn’s Disease, fatigue, dry scalp, and anxiety….
Her mother had Lupus and fibromyalgia; father, Ulcerative Colitis. And her brother suffered from Rheumatoid Arthritis.
She had been diagnosed with IBS in high school. 8 years later, shortly before coming to see me, she was diagnosed Crohn’s Disease.
She was feeling so much better, she skipped the three remaining appointments she had already pre-paid for, out-of-pocket.
Her medical team couldn’t decide which was the true diagnosis between the two she had.
They wanted her to have another colonoscopy. She had gone to see a very well-known MD who specialized in taking a more whole-person approach, but she wasn't better.
She was still experiencing bloating, gassiness, and diarrhea – no matter what she ate. She was tired of the sudden attacks of severe pain in her lower abdomen after meals. It was so bad that, she had to get in the fetal position to endure the pain.

She had been doing the best she knew. Through research she came up with a smorgasbord of things that were supposed to help reduce her symptoms.
